Andy Murray Is Engaged! Tennis Star to Wed Kim Sears
The 27-year-old Scotland-born tennis star is engaged to longtime girlfriend Kim Sears, 26,BBC News reported on Wednesday, citing his agent. The British outlet said it is thought that Murray popped the question last Wednesday. They two have not commented.
Murray and Sears have been together for about nine years. They met at the U.S. Open in 2005, BBC News said. She has since attended many of his matches, including Wimbledon in 2013, when he was photographed giving her a kiss after beating Novak Djokovic in the Men's Singles Final.
The first time Sears watched Murray compete in a major tennis event was in 2006, in San Jose, California.
After beating world champions Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt, Murray said, "It's the first time Kim has come to a tournament. That made me quite relaxed. I'll have to take her to some more tournaments," according to the U.K. newspaper The Telegraph.
Murray has also brought Sears to other, more formal events, including dinners.
In 2013, she accompanied him as he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and received a medal from Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, at Buckingham Palace in London.
In January, Murray had sparked marriage speculation with a joke tweet.
"We are getting married just after Wimbledon," he said. "Should be a great day."
He later tweeted, "3 things.. I don't smoke grass, I'm not getting married(yet) and I don't want to kill Rafael Nadal.."
Sears is English and is the daughter of former Lawn Tennis Association head of women's tennis Nigel Sears, BBC News said. She and Murray share two dogs, Maggie May and Rusty.
