Benedict Cumberbatch Is Married! Sherlock Star Weds Sophie Hunter on Valentine's Day (and Guess Who Was There!)

And just like that, Benedict Cumberbatch is officially off the market.

Less than a year after first going public as a couple, the Oscar-nominated British actor married theater director Sophie Hunter on Saturday in a private ceremony at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church in the town of Mottistone on the Isle of Wight in England, surrounded by about 100 family members and friends, a source told E! News.

Yes, Valentine's Day. A day that will now live in infamy for Cumberbitches everywhere...

Cumberbatch's Sherlock and The Hobbit co-star Martin Freeman was among the guests, the source told E! News. In the most recent third season of Sherlock, Cumberbatch's title character had served as the best man at the wedding of John Watson, played by Freeman.

But back to the newlyweds! Their wedding ceremony was followed by a reception at the centuries-old Mottistone Manor. Hunter's maternal great-great-grandfather is John Seely, the first Baron Mottistone, whose family had purchased the property in the 1860s.

Cumberbatch and Hunter's engagment was announced the charmingly old-fashioned way, with a notice placed in the London Times in early November. Less old-fashioned was the reveal two months later that Hunter was pregnant with their first child together--but Cumberbatch was aglow with the bloom of love regardless.

Admitting to E! News a few days after the engagement announcement that it was indeed nice to have so much support from his loyal fans, he added, "but the only support I really need, to be honest, is from the woman I love, who I proposed to."

"She's just really cool," Cumberbatch said of his fiancée in an interview with People also in November.

Regarding the fact that some women might not be able to deal as easily with his brand of fame, he added, "She's proud of my work, she's proud of me, and she loves me. That's the bottom line, isn't it? That's one of the reasons it's a good fit. It could be a really difficult thing, but she's just so in command of it."

And these two know how to keep a secret. Cumberbatch told reporters last month at the 2015 Palm Springs International Film Festival that he was focusing on "one thing at a time," and it appeared that making it through awards season in one piece was tops on the list, with shooting a new season of Sherlock a close second.

Instead, he and Hunter will have to forego a honeymoon for the time being, because the groom has obligations in Los Angeles on Monday and a command appearance at the Oscars on Feb. 22. The 38-year-old thesp scored his first Best Actor nomination for his role as mathematician Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and, win or lose, he'll be presenting during the show as well.
