Sofía Vergara Says She Aced Test to Become Naturalized U.S. Citizen: "I Got All Questions Perfect"

Sofía Vergara is now an American citizen! The Colombian-born bombshell and Modern Family star says she earned a top score on her U.S. naturalization exam.

The highest-paid female TV star ((who earned $37 million over the past year, according to Forbes) said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday that it was a "very emotional moment" for her.

"It took me a lot of time to get my residence even though I was working here for a long time," she said. "But it was fun and I got all my questions perfect."

Criteria for becoming a naturalized citizen include being a permanent resident of the United States for at least five years. Also, applications from all women may be accepted but certain restrictions are placed on men.

Applicants must also demonstrate their English skills and knowledge of U.S. government and history. They must show they can speak English and understand the language by answering questions during an interview, by reading one out of three sentences "in a manner suggesting to the USCIS officer that the applicant appears to understand the meaning of the sentence" and by writing one of three sentences "in a manner that would be understandable as written to the USCIS officer."

An oral civics test is then administered. Applicants must also correctly answer six out of 10 questions, out of 100 possible queries. Examples seen on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website include "Who was President during the Great Depression and World War II?," "What is the name of the national anthem?," "Which ocean is on the East Coast of the United States?" and "Name one state that borders Mexico."

The applicant must also promise that they are willing to perform military or civilian service for the United States if required by law.

"Are you planning to fight for the United States?"

"I'm ready!" Vergara replied.

At age 42, Vergara is too old to be eligible to be drafted into the U.S. military.

Applicants must also take an oath of allegiance to the United States in front of a USCIS officer.

"They make you do the swear of the [raises right hand], of the thing," Vergara told Kimmel. "It was easy because the swearing of the thing, you don't have to memorize...anything. You just, you just repeat and I would be like, you know, like I did it, like, really fast so he didn't know if I was doing it right."

Vergara studying dentistry and worked as a runway model and actress in her native country before she moved to Miami about 16 years ago, along with several family members, after her brother, one of five siblings, was killed in a botched kidnapping. In 2011, another brother, Julio, was deported after a series of arrests.

Vergara joked about her warm welcome to the United States while hosting Saturday Night Live in 2012, while her son Manolo, now 22, sat in the audience.

"I always heard that immigrants had a really hard life when they came to America," she said. "But when I showed up here, everyone was so nice! The men bought me drinks and offered me a place to sleep! This country welcomed me with open arms and pulled down pants."

During her first few years in the United States, she hosted a Univision Spanish-language game show and appeared on shows such as Entourage before she was cast as Gloria, wife of Married With Children alum Ed O'Neil's character Jay, on ABC's Modern Family, which debuted in 2009.

"Growing up in Colombia, it was every girl's dream to one day grow up and marry Al Bundy," she joked on SNL.
