Could The Vampire Diaries Go on Without Nina, Ian or Paul? Boss Julie Plec Weighs In

"Just the thought of it actually hurts me a little."

This is what The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec has to say about the idea of a seventh season without any of her main cast members.

Us, too, Julie. Us too!

As E! News previously reported, only two of the show's three leads--Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley--has signed on for a seventh season, which would kick off next fall, if the CW decides to pick up the series. Season six is currently airing--and kicking some serious creative ass--on Thursdays. (A new episode airs tonight.)

TVD's ratings have been holding steady, averaging about 2 million viewers (last week's episode was its largest audience since March), but the decision of a seventh season likely won't be made until early 2015.

So what are the chances that season seven will happen? And would TVD's producers and the CW really consider continuing the show without any of the main trio--Nina, Ian or Paul? If one of them decides not to continue?
